Inclusive design is good design: RNIB Collaborate for Good

Yesterday, the RNIB brought together business partners across multiple industries to discuss how we can build a more equitable and accessible society. We were delighted to be a part of the conversation. Our Head of Consumer, Lettie Tanner, shares her key takeouts when putting inclusivity at the heart of product and services.

Collaboration is key: Involve charities like RNIB that inspire and advise corporate businesses, and most importantly, have a deep understanding of lived-experiences

Co-create: Remove unconscious biases by integrating communities you want to reach into the design and decision-making process

Confront the ROI conversation: Designing more accessibly for all gives access to new markets, creates loyalty from existing customers, and keeps brands ahead of consumer demands. Ultimately, it’s about doing the right thing as we transition to a more equitable society

Diverse design teams are fundamental: Ensure your design teams are diverse, and that you work with design consultancies who have inclusivity and diversity baked-in

Test and learn: Trial inclusive innovations like P&G have by implementing tactile notches to differentiate shampoo and conditioner bottles by touch in the US market. Kellogg’s launched 10,000 limited edition Coco Pop packs using NaviLens technology to provide audio product information via an app – which was such a success it’s now being rolled out across all brands.

Technology and AI is a game-changer for better accessibility: This will continue to develop and advance but work with solutions that are available now like Microsofts SeeingAI and NaviLens – progress is better than perfection.
