InTouch – new sensory experiences

Developed in 2014 in collaboration with the University of Bristol, Ensera Design’s InTouch concept explored how haptic sensory experiences could be used to create physical connections, reaching beyond screen-based voice and video communications.

The concept is now finding a new outlet, being tested as part of a wide-ranging research programme, Sensing Spaces of Healthcare, looking at how sensorial experiences might enhance outcomes for staff and patients in hospital environments.

InTouch project

The InTouch concept was originally developed as part of the REACT Objects Sandbox programme, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council in 2014.

Ensera Design partnered with a team from the University of Bristol to explore concepts around connecting remotely located families and friends and the power of storytelling, working towards prototype “objects” which could be tested and evaluated. The prototypes were subsequently exhibited at London’s V&A museum.

Sensorial communications

A core part of the concept was the InTouch Pebbles; tactile handheld objects, wirelessly connected in pairs so that when one user squeezed or shook their pebble, a reciprocal movement would be replicated on the other pebble.

The Ensera Design team created functional sets of the pebbles for evaluating with users. In testing, the pebbles proved to be desirable and engaging, highlighting the potential value in (re)adding sensorial elements to modern communcations.

Sensing Spaces of Healthcare

Dr. Victoria Bates, Associate Professor in Modern Medical History at University of Bristol is leading a research programme to explore how sensorial tools can enhance healthcare experiences. The programme, Sensing Spaces of Healthcare: Rethinking the NHS Hospital is currently exploring opportunities for the InTouch prototype with the Young Persons’ Advisory Group (YPAG) at Great Ormond Street Hospital and project partners GOSH Arts with the aim of improving sensory experiences in hospitals for children and young people.
