Learning and Development Day

Spring is finally here, and with it the signs of growth and the clarity of lighter skies. So it’s appropriate that we’ve just celebrated the first of our three dedicated learning and development days for 2023 at Ensera Design.

We expect a lot of our team and their passion for what they do is great for our clients, but it often means that they don’t take the time to check out that course they were interested in, read that book, or listen to that podcast. Differing project schedules also mean that even when they do find time for themselves, they can rarely count on a colleague being available to share the experience with them. Collaboration matters at Ensera Design, as does doing things differently and working together to create something new.

That’s why we specifically create time in everyone’s calendars, with dates published at the start of the year, to ensure that every member of the team knows they have this time set aside, with resources available and all the encouragement they need to spend the day on anything they feel would help them to grow in their role or develop new skills.

Intentionally creating space

Learning & development happens all year round, but these specific days aligned in everyone’s calendars provide the right conditions for magic to happen. Giving people permission (and encouraging them to give themselves permission) to press pause on the everyday and consider something different is a great motivator, as well as offering a restorative break from busy consultancy life.

Trusting people to use it the right way

We don’t check up on people on L&D Day. We don’t tell them what to do. Instead, we offer ideas, opportunities and some organised activities allowing everyone to pick and choose whatever suits them. Some use it to catch up on reading or courses they’ve had set aside for a while; others use it to work together as whole teams or in small groups with a shared purpose. Most importantly we let people do what suits them most, and we trust them to know what that is. When you work in a team like we have, getting people to slow down is sometimes harder than getting them to do more.

Encouraging something new

One of the big advantages of these days is the chance to step out of ordinary roles; collaborate with different people; explore untried tools, or simply spend the day doing something we wouldn’t ordinarily do. We know that bringing together new combinations of people, in new situations or with unusual challenges is the only way to see things differently and create new thinking. After each learning & development day, we seek feedback from the team on what they would like to see and do for future learning and development days, to ensure this space is continually evolving.

We’re proud to support the growth of our amazing team in this way and we look forward to sharing some of the outcomes and learnings from this L&D day with you in the next few weeks.
