The Challenge

Medical microwave technologists, Emblation, were creating a new ablation therapy which would target the coagulation of soft tissue during non-invasive procedures.

Our challenge was to package the sophisticated microwave therapy into an ergonomic, sculpted form which amplified usability for the healthcare professional.

The device’s intricate electromechanical core—featuring eight circuit boards, a microwave engine, battery, LCD, heat exchanger, fan, and keypad—posed a significant design challenge. This dense assembly clashed with the ergonomic ambitions for a handheld format, demanding clever packaging of the internal architecture for spatial efficiency

The Solution

The handheld SwiftPro device, incorporates a powerful microwave generator, onboard power pack, and a display and controls, within a sculpted ergonomic form to achieve balance and comfort in use.

The Execution

Working closely with the Emblation technology team, we reviewed schematic arrangements, testing with weighted sketch models to establish proof-of-principle ergonomics. We then transitioned into digital design, developing a full 3D CAD assembly that captured the character of the form while integrating functional elements. As we refined the design for manufacture, we worked hard to balance engineering needs with comfort and usability, and an overall aesthetic impression that expresses values of precision & quality.
