Rapid Covid Ventilator Development
Providing design, technical development, usability and medical approvals expertise to a collaborative consortium in response to the government challenge.
The Challenge
Development of a brand new ventilator fully approved by MHRA within 3 months.
The Covid pandemic led to a shortage of ventilators overnight. The Ventilator Challenge asked teams to bring together all the skills needed to develop, validate and manufacture ventilators in the shortest time possible.
The Solution
A fully validated, hospital grade ventilator developed maximizing the use of off the shelf, available, components and simplified processes, and minimizing the need for training in clinical setting through our application of user-centered design.
The Execution
Working remotely and with the limitations of the global shutdown, in partnership with Babcock and Kohler Mira to develop the ventilator and facilitate the start of the 10000 unit production.
Our experience in design of medical devices helped the team work closely with regulatory bodies to streamline the design and approval process.
Smart choices of components and processes to facilitate speed to production combined with intense collaborative team effort helped to achieve remarkable development timelines.
Despite the restriction of the rapid development requirements, clear, simple user interface and instructions were vital to achieving an approved design.
Close involvement with manufacturers setting up dedicated production lines informed by close integration with design and development process.
