Bringing new energy to prosthetics

Össur

Power Knee™

Össur Power Knee device

Incorporating motorized power into a prosthetic knee, to replace muscle function and deliver new levels of lift, balance, control and endurance for people with lower limb amputations.

The Challenge

A ground-up redesign of the entire product, setting the expectations for next generation prosthetics.

The entire product required re-designing to meet the challenging new requirements, including an IP64 rating, significant weight loss and high capacity batteries, while retaining the sleek elegant look of a lower leg.

The Solution

Working in close collaboration with the Össur team, we utilized the latest technology and composite materials to design and deliver a full suite of dynamic mechanical parts, all fully tested and ready to go into manufacture.

The Execution

From Össur’s initial concept, we worked collaboratively to develop the structural and cosmetic qualities of the engineering component package.

Utilising our simulation expertise and in-house prototyping facilities, enabled rapid progress. Using finite element analysis tools, we were able to reduce weight and increase strength. Once optimized simulated designs were established, we prototyped and tested the results to confirm performance in physical reality.

Power Knee achieves incredibly compact integration of electro-mechanical systems, made possible by the integration of our mechanical and electronic engineering electronics expertise.
