Topical Medication Applicator
Using prototyping and testing to inform concept design and prove usability in precision and broad spreading applicators.
The Challenge
Create two designs for a precision acne treatment and a broad spreading testosterone medication.
The client needed a simple acne medication applicator that would mix and apply the gel precisely to the acne itself. In contrast their testosterone medication needed to be applied in a broad spreading motion over a larger patch of skin.

The Solution
Through rapid 3D printing using rigid and flexible materials, the team was able to quickly iterate and test different precision and broad sweeping solutions until the optimal designs were refined.

The Execution
The acne treatment required two medications to be stored separately but mixed as they were applied. We created two pouches that would break and mix upon delivery with the precision tip. Our team used the client’s existing medication packets and designed new features optimizing a mixing chamber to provide proper treatment.
To apply the testosterone medication, we prototyped multiple shapes and forms before settling on a unique shape that allowed the medication to pool in a well. The flexible silicone could then spread it across the target area while keeping the user’s fingers away from the medication.

The Impact
Prototyped, tested, and proven. New and novel ways of delivering topical medication.
Through end-user studies, we proved the benefits of our designs, allowing our client to move forward with confidence. Our team delivered fully designed and engineered solutions to move to production.
